There are connections of slavery to many places around the world including Egypt, Mesopotamia, and America. Although there were traces of slavery in these places, Roman slaves did however have a different lifestyle. Despite the fact that they performed manual labor for their owners, they received meals, money, housing, and care which were not granted to slaves in other societies.
In some places today, there are variations of slavery in Rome. For example, there are maids, nannies, and drivers who are provided with a place to live, food, and are paid by their boss to do manual labor for them.
Roman slavery affects us today because the Romans brought in slaves from conquered territories which caused cultural diffusion throughout the world that can still be found in the present.
